Conciencia Colectiva

Blending art, meditation, and Yoga, the Conciencia Colectiva Project was a two-day event consisting of collective creation and installation work in McAllen, Texas. Conciencia Colectiva explored experimental processes of meditation and collaborative work through group meditation and abstract painting; this action allowed participants to become collaborative artists featured in the exhibition the following day.
The project was inspired by C.G. Jung’s theories of the collective
unconscious, a dream state, thought by Jung, to be shared
by all and accessed each night during sleep. Conciencia
Colectiva or collective consciousness is the idea that this dream state can be accessed through conscious effort via meditation practices. Long time practitioners of meditation often report shared experiences of altered states of consciousness, in which common symbols, shapes, colors, or motifs are shared.
The first event of the project was group meditation and painting. After a series of breathwork, poses, and meditation, participants were invited to freely paint upon a large canvas presented before them. This stage of the project created a space in which participants were not only able to freely express themselves and take part in a fun activity, but by painting they became collaborating artists on the piece.
The second day an exhibition was held featuring the Conciencia Colectiva painting as the centerpiece of the works and a series of surrealist installations that viewers could interact with and use to experience meditative states.
